Have you ever wondered why Jesus’ miracles, which brought hope to so many, were seen as a threat to others? The 2025 animated film The King of Kings reignited my interest in the life of Jesus, much like The Passion of the Christ (2004) did years ago.

The film is told through the eyes of a child, Walter, who is a mischievous boy fascinated by King Arthur. His father, the novelist Charles Dickens, tells him the story of Jesus in a way that resonates with a child’s imagination. This makes the film incredibly accessible for younger viewers. For adults, it serves as a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the life of Jesus, seeing biblical stories we’ve heard in sermons or read in scriptures come to life through stunning animation. If you're looking for a fresh introduction to the Gospel narrative, I highly recommend this film.

However, for those who are already deeply familiar with the Bible, the narrative structure—being told in episodic segments for children—might feel a bit fragmented or predictable. Yet, despite that, there is a profound sense of wonder in being immersed in the world Jesus lived in.

What stuck with me most, however, was the film's take on the people surrounding Jesus. It wasn't just about the miracles; it was about the reaction to them. The film poignantly captures this dynamic:

For those suffering, Jesus’ actions were a lifeline. But for those in power—the elite who had everything to lose—His influence was a dangerous disruption to the status quo. Often, we find ourselves hiding the truth or resorting to deceit just to protect our own interests.

Watching The King of Kings made me think about individuals who break the mold—people who see the world through a different lens and have the courage to act on it. If you are waiting for someone to come and shatter the oppressive systems of this world, you are likely someone who doesn't hold that power yet. Those who already hold it rarely want the mold to be broken.

This film beautifully illustrates what Jesus meant when He said that we must have the heart of a child to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. It encourages us to look at the world, and our faith, with that same purity and openness.

Interestingly, the film is based on Charles Dickens's own book, The Life of Our Lord. Dickens wrote it between 1846 and 1849 specifically for his children, asking that it never be published. It wasn't until 85 years later, in 1934, that his descendants finally shared it with the world. Seeing it as a story told by a father to his children, rather than a writer to his audience, makes this cinematic experience feel truly special.
